Measuring Guide
How to Measure
Your Staircase
Order the right parts the first time, every time. Step-by-step measurements, diagrams, and code requirements — all in one place.
Staircase Anatomy
Know the name of every part before you shop — it avoids confusion when ordering and ensures you get exactly what you need the first time.
Measuring Rise & Run
Rise and run are the two most critical numbers. Get these right and everything else follows. Always measure in inches — never feet.
Rise = vertical height per step · Run = horizontal depth per tread · Measure in inches
IRC max: 7.75" per step Measure at least twice
IRC min: 10" per tread Typical: 10–11"
Baluster Spacing & Quantity
Building code sets the maximum gap between balusters — but always verify your local requirement before ordering. Nosing overhang, tread width, and spacing all affect your final count.
Handrail Height & Profile
The handrail must be graspable and sit at the correct height above the tread nosing. This measurement also determines your newel post height — get it right first.
Newel Post Sizing
Newel post height isn't a fixed number — it's determined by your handrail height and how much post you want above it. Here's how to think about it correctly.
Start with handrail height — this is your foundation
Code requires the handrail to sit 34"–38" above the tread nosing, measured vertically. This is non-negotiable and sets the minimum height your post must reach.
The post must support the handrail at the code height
The handrail attaches to the post at the 34"–38" mark. Your post needs to be at least this tall to support the rail correctly.
How much post shows above the handrail — your design choice
There is no code minimum for the space between the top of the handrail and the post cap or top of the post. This is purely a stylistic decision. More extension above the rail = more traditional look; flush or minimal = contemporary.
Width: match to baluster visual weight
Common sizes: 3.5", 4.5", and 5.5" square. Wider balusters call for a wider newel to maintain proportion.

| Measurement | Typical Range | Code Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rise per step | 7" – 7.75" | Max 7.75" (IRC) | All risers must be within 3/8" of each other |
| Run per tread | 10" – 11" | Min 10" (IRC) | Nosing overhang max 1.25" |
| Handrail height | 34" – 38" | 34"–38" from nosing | Measured vertically from tread nosing to top of rail |
| Baluster gap | 3" – 4" | Max 4" gap (IRC) | Check local code. Typically 2–3 balusters per tread. |
| Newel post height | Varies | Design choice above rail | Post must reach handrail height (34"–38" from nosing) |
| Post width | 3.5" / 4.5" / 5.5" | No code requirement | Match to baluster visual weight and stair width |
| Order quantity | Calculated + 10% | — | Always order 10% extra for breakage and cuts |
